Israel committed another crime against Palestinian journalists on Saturday, June 20, by killing Al Jazeera Mubasher cameraman Ahmed Wishah in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a house in the Bureij refugee camp, in the central Gaza Strip. Al Jazeera reported that two other people were killed and one other was injured in the assault.
The assassination of Ahmed came two months after his brother Mohammed Wishah, who also worked with Al Jazeera Mubasher as a correspondent, was assassinated by Israel in Gaza city.
Al Jazeera Media Network issued a statement condemning the “deliberate killing” of Ahmed, the 12th Al Jazeera media worker assassinated by Israel since its aggression on Gaza began in October 2023.
The network reiterated “its call on the international community and legal institutions to take urgent, practical measures to hold the Israeli officials involved in these appalling crimes accountable.”
Israel killed 236 journalists and media workers in less than three years
Despite the US-brokered ceasefire deal that came into force in October 2025, Israel has continued to apply its genocidal tactics, including the targeted assassination of journalists, in the Gaza Strip.
According to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), at least 236 Palestinian journalists and media workers have been killed by Israel in Gaza since October 2023. Several journalists have also been injured, while others have been missing over the same period.
IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger warned that “media workers in areas of armed conflict must be treated and protected as civilians and allowed to perform their work without interference.”
“There is intense and deeply concerned interest in this conflict all round the world, but people will only be able to understand what is really going on if journalists are allowed to do their work,” Bellanger added.
Israel escalates its aggression on Gaza to derail phase two of the ceasefire deal
Analysts suggest that Israel has resorted to escalating its attacks on Gaza, whenever a progress in ceasefire negotiations is made. It has followed the same strategy in Lebanon as well to derail the US-Iran talks to end the regional war.

Over the past two weeks, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) intensified daily assaults across Gaza and expanded their control beyond the yellow line. These moves took place around the same period that Palestinian factions submitted their response to Mladenov’s roadmap.
