Israel launches military operation in West Bank after IOF massacre in Nablus

For many, the rapid developments in the occupied territory suggest that the West Bank will be the next major flashpoint within Israel’s multi-front war across West Asia.

Friday, July 24 marked a bloody day for Palestinians of Tal village southwest of West Bank northern governorate of Nablus.

Heavily armed illegal Israeli settlers arrived in the village to launch a violent assault under the protection of Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), and unarmed Palestinian men rushed to the site to confront them.

Consequently, a deadly clash erupted resulting in the killing of four Palestinian men, and leaving four others injured.

According to local media outlets, the slain men were two brothers and two of their cousins, who were identified as Jawad Hussein Ali Ramadan, Ibrahim Hussein Ali Ramadan, Imran Ahmed Ali Ramadan and Farouq Adnan Ali Ramadan.

Prior to being assassinated, Farouq seized the rifle of one of the IOF soldiers who was pointing it at him. He then opened fire on that soldier and another, who were later pronounced dead by the IOF.

Netanyahu and Katz order large-scale military operation in the West Bank following Tal clashes

Despite being responsible for the deadly assault, Netanyahu’s government used the death of the two Israeli soldiers to escalate Israeli violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Hours after the four Palestinian civilians were massacred in Tal, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the IOF to expand its military operation in the West Bank and impose further restrictions on Palestinians.

Netanyahu and Katz instructed the following measures to be taken as part of the extensive operation:

  • The demolition of Farouq’s home.
  • Forceful actions in villages acting as resistance hubs
  • Reinforcement of IOF units throughout the West Bank
  • Imposing further restrictions on movement by separating traffic routes and military checkpoints
  • Speeding up the legalization of farm outposts and setting up new ones

Hours following the attack, Israeli forces raided the Nablus Specialized Hospital where some of the injured were receiving treatment. Israeli soldiers forced doctors, nurses, and patients to lay on the floor at gunpoint, restraining some health workers, and then detained two people, one who had been receiving treatment for an injury from the settler attack.

Analysts suggest that the Israeli military escalation in the West Bank aims to keep as many fronts as possible across West Asia flaring up. A strategy that would ensure the continuity of Israel’s regional multi-front war.
